Problem: Daten auf defektem Computer

Gestern schmierte mein T400 Notebook wegen Überhitzung durch Lüfterausfall wiederholt ab.

Ich konnte als Workaround eine externen Lüfter (Notebook Cool Pad) darunterstellen, möchte aber zur Sicherheit meine T400-Arbeiten zunächst (bis zur Reparatur) auf einem meiner anderen Computer fortsetzen.

Funktioniert auf Anhieb super.

SkyDrive ist nicht nur eine “Online-Platte” auf die ich als Laufwerk von verschiedenen Rechnen zugreifen kann, sondern ich kann auch Offline arbeiten und alle Computer mit der gleichen Windows Live ID werden ständig und automatisch synchronisiert.

iPad und Android werden ebenfalls unterstützt

Datensicherung mit CrashPlan

Permanente Datensicherung in die “Cloud” oder auf andere Computer im Netz.

Sicherung in die Cloud kostet (z.B. 5 USD pro Monat), Sicherung auf andere Computer sind kostenlos.

CrashPlan ist realisiert als Windows-Service, der ständig im Hintergrund läuft und laufend den Computer mit der Datensicherung synchronisiert.

Das Datenvolumen ist unbegrenzt. Die Geschwindigkeit der Datenübertragung ist in der Praxis der limitierende Faktor.

Die Erst-Sicherung läuft viele Tage, danach werden dann nur noch die Deltas übertragen, was viel schneller geht.

Zu einem CrashPlan-Konto können mehrere Computer gehören (wenn der abgeschlossene Plan das erlaubt). Man kann so als Zielpfad für die Datensicherung eines Computers einen anderen Computer, der zu diesem CrashPlan-Konto gehört, angeben.

Zwischen verschiedenen ChrashPlan-Konten kann man “Freund“-Beziehungen einrichten und dann so einen Freund als Zielpfad für eine Datensicherung angeben. Bei dem “Freund” erscheinen dann solche einkommenden Datensicherungen als “Quellen”

After the first year of test usage, what functions of iTunes Match make sense for me?

iTunes Match: The First Year

Since one year I now have my iTunes match subscription (without automatic prologation).

My onriginal and primary intent was to “legalize” my somewhat grown collection of single MP3 songs.

I also wanted to try iTunes match and gather experience, which functionality might be useful for me for the next years (switching from “Test Mode” to “Production Mode”).

  • Legalize old MP3 Collections: Works good
  • Purchase some “missing” songs for my collection: Yes I did this a few times (iTunes Store)
  • “Upgrade” MP3 songs from my CD collection to AAC digital quality: works good
  • “Upgrade” MP3 songs from Vinyl records to digital quality: did work only for a very few number of songs
  • Backup: Apples iCloud as a safe backup for my songs (5000 songs, 25 GB): This is a very valuable function, since it’s a near real time remote backup i.e. in Apple’s “iCloud” (precondition: you must use iTunes as your song library!)

iTunes: Access to Songs in iCloud

Remote Access: When I’m away from home, I have easily access to my songs with Apple mobile devices like iPhone and iPad.

For my mobile notebook computer (Windows 7) I decided not to make a local copy of all of my song files (5000 songs, 25 GB), but to try a connection via the internet to my iCloud. This was not so easy. The documentation for this sceario is difficult and sometimes wrong. Apple repeatedly ignores Windows Notebooks when talking about “mobile devides” – focussing on iPhone and iPad only….

What worked for me is:

  1. Installing iTunes latest version on my mobile Windows 7 notebook.
  2. Connected iTunes to the Apple Store: This made available my purchased songs (quite a few) but not all the other songs I have in iCoud
  3. Only after I activated “Turn On iTunes Match” in iTunes (Menue: Store > iTunes Match) I could see all my songs in iTunes on my mobile Windows notebook. iTunes did not ask for an extra subscription of iTUnes Match, but automatically used my exisiting iTunes Match account.
  4. This is not “Steaming Audio”. the songs from iCloud are effectrively downloaded and replay starts early (AAC and MP3 ?)

I also installed iCloud Control Panel 2.1.1 for Windows on my mobile notebook, but am not sure, if this was necessary for the access to the songs in iCloud – since Apple only talks about “Fotostreams”, “Favorites” and “Outlook” – what I realy do not need in the Cloud.

Der Flachbildfernseher Philips 32PFL3605H/12 hat, wie alle Flachbildfernseher, keine vernünfigen Laufsprecher.

  • Nachteil 1: Eingebaute Lautsprecher klingen blechern
  • Nachteil 2: Die eingebauten Lautsprecher strahlen zur Seite ab; d.h. an neben dem Fernseher ist der Ton lauter als vor dem Fernseher.

Die Lösung: ein zusätzliches Lautsprechersystem, häufig “Sound Bar” genannt.

Für den kleinen Philips LCD-Fernseher (32 Zoll = 80 cm Bilddiagonale und auch ca. 80 cm Gerätebreite) passen beispielsweise:

  • Philips CSS5123/12
  • Yamaha YAS 101

Das sagen die Datenblätter und die Rezensenten

Separater Subwoofer, der mit der Sound Bar über Bluetooth kommuniziert und damit nur mit einer Steckdose verbunden werden muss.

Verbindung mit dem Fernseher über HDMI. Dadurch wird  der Fernseher netzwerkfähig (WLAN, Streaming,…)

Zusätzlich zur HDMI-Buchse hat der Sound Bar einen analogen (Cinch) und zwei digitale Toneingänge (optisch und koaxial)..

Der Sound Bar hat auch einen USB-Anschluss zur Wiedergabe von Medien auf dem USB-Stick oder auch einer USB-Festplatte.

Zur Lautstärkeregelung genügt die TV-Fernbedienung. Flachbildfernseher schicken die Lautstärkebefehle über den HDMI-Ausgang (ARC) zum Soundbar.

Und das ist meine Erfahrung

Einen älteren Flachbildferseher mit HIlfe des CSS5123/12 mit aktueller Funktionalität aufpeppen….. Genau das schreiben nur Rezensenten, die das in der Praxis nicht ausprobiert haben.

Der Phillips SoundBar CSS5123/12 wird idealer Weise per HDMI mit dem Fehrseher verbunden wo dann ARC (Audio Reverse Channel) die Benutzung besonders einfach macht. Ältere Flachbildferseher haben aber kein HDMI mt ARC.

ARC ist offizieller Bestandteil von HDMI 1.4  und das hat  z.B. mein Samsung UE46C6700 nicht.

Auch der Phillips 32PFL3605H/12 hat lauf Datenblatt weder HDMI 1.4 noch ARC.

Mit dem Phillips 32PFL3605H/12 habe ich den SoundBar aber trotzden über HDMI zum Laufen gebracht. Am Fernseher habe ich in den Einstellungs-Menüs unter “HDMI-CEC” EasyLink  dann irgenwo eine Einstellung “HDMI 1 Audio Out” gefunden – das war’s.

Nun leuchtet auf der SoundBar die zweite LED von links mit der Beschriftung “ARC”. Das kann der Fernsher also obwohl sein HDMI “nur” v1.3 ist.

Das HDMI-Kabel vom SoundBar  musste ich am Fernseher dann noch von “HDMI links seitwärts” auf “HDMI hinten” umstecken (damit meine ich die HDMI-Buche auf der Rückseite des Fernsehers) und dann funzte alles. Wobei als “Source” am Fernseher dann wieder “TV” eingestellt ist, wo per SCART das Kabel Deutschland Kästchen drannhängt.

Die Bedienung erfolgt dann mit nur einer Fernbedienung, nämlich der des Fernsehers. Falls man den SoundBar fein-konfigurieren will, muss man aber immer am Fernseher die “Source” von “TV” auf “HDMI” wechseln und anschliessend wieder zurück.

Alternativen zum Audio-Anschluss über HDMI sucht man fast vergeblich: Alles was wie Audio aussieht ist INPUT; nur der Kopfhöreranschluss links an der Seite ist ein Audio-Out.

Nur eine Fernbedienung soll durch “Philips EasyLInk” bewirkt sein. Das ist ein Philip- Marketing-Slang für das standardmäßige HDMI-CEC..

Problems with Windows 7 and the BASS Library

After migrating from Windows Vista to Windows 7 my software “Online Radio Tuner” did not work anymore.

The error message was something like a wrong version in the BASS Library.

I re-installed Online Radio Tuner, exported and imported my favorites and re-registered – now it works again on Win7.

The unregistered version after the trial period does not allow you to record stations and does not show album art.

My CrashPlan Accounts

Now that I have migrated my central NAS from QNAP to WHS 2011, it is possible to run CrashPlan directly on the WHS which is also my NAS with one CrashPlan account only.

My “Main” CrashPlan account saves certain directories of my WHS to to CrashPlan cloud. This costs me EUR 3 per month.

My “secondary” CrashPlan accounts save certain directories of my local machines to my central WHS. This is free of charge…

Mein Windows Home Server 2011

Unboxing & Installation

  • Today my HP Proliant Micro Server N40L arrived.
  • This N40L has preinstalled 4GB of RAM and a DVD drive.
  • Microsift Windows Home Server 2011 was bundled but not preinstalled.
  • So the only thing I had to do for starting is to install at least one Fixed Drive.
  • Connecting the power cord, a USB keyboard and a VGA display, then inserting the Home Server DVD and the installation starts.
  • At the end of the installation I am warned, not to use the server as a normal workstation, but through a so called “Dashboard”.
  • I should now connect all my client computers with the new server by typing “http://proliant/connect”
  • When I do this, I am asked to download a “ComputerConnector” for my client….

Differences WHS 2011 zum Vorgänger

Remote Access

Auf dem HomeServer das “Dashboard” (früher: Konsole) aufrufen.

Dort “Remotewebzugriff einrichten” anklicken und nacheinander:

  1. Router Einrichten
  2. Domänenname. Einrichten
  3. Websiteeinstellungen. Anpassen.

Das automatische Einrichten des Routers setzt UPnP beim Router voraus. Wenn der Router das nicht kann (z.B. SpeedPort W921V) muss man dies manuell auf dem Router selbst vornehmen.

Als Domänenname wird https://xxxxx.homeserver.com/ eingestellt. unter diesem Namen ist dann der HomeServer aus dem Internet erreichbar…. Wenn alles richtig eingestellt wurde….

Einrichtung des Routers ohne UPnP

Port-Weiterleitungen vom Router auf den HomeServer: 80, 443, 4125

Folgende Port-Weiterleitungen habe ich nun manuell auf dem SpeedPort W921V eingerichtet:

  • Router 8080 –> HomeServer 80
  • Router 443 –> HomeServer 443
  • Router 4125 –> HomeServer 4125

Und nun funktioniert der Zugriff auf den HomeServer (und auch das dort installierte ownCloud) von außerhalb.

Mit einer “Port-Weiterleitung” schaltet der SpeedPort auch automatisch die angegebenen Router-Ports geöffnet.

Inhalte in diese Ordner kopieren (z.B. MP3-Songs, Videos etc.)

VPN mit Hamachi (LogMeIn)

Hamachi is no longer free of costs.
I have changed my ADSL router to a FritzBox 7390, which natively supports a VPN.

VPN = Virtual Private Network

Ein VPN bedeutet, dass ich über das “offene” Internet eine verschlüselten Tunnel aufbauen kann und so z.B. von unterwegs mein heimisches lokales Netzwerk (LAN) über TCP/IP erreichen kann.

Dazu ist erforderlich. dass mein heimischer Internet-Router so ein VPN durchlässt bzw. eventuelle sogar unterstützt.

Ich kann dann von unterwegs alle meine Computer im LAN über TCP/IP erreichen und dann solche Applikationen untzen, die lediglich TCP/IP benötigen…..

Why Hamachi?

I am using a Speedport V921W  ADSL Router. This router is not capable of port forwarding, because for security reasons this is blocked (believe by deleting the RIP tables).

For this reason my interest was pointed at Hamachi.

Experience with Hamachi

Hamachi is a “hosted VPN” tool

Hamachi works “peer to peer” meaning we have only have to setup  VPN Clients and no VPN Server. The VPN Server is hosted by the nice people of LogMeIn.

Hamachi Setup

  • Get a LogMeIn account, or use an existing one
  • Login with your LogMeIn account at http://www.logmein.com
  • Download the software from the Menu “Products -> Hamachi”
  • Install Hamachi
  • Start Hamachi
  • On first use a pop-up window occurrs: Join an existing Network or Create a new Network
  • Join the existing Network that you have

Yesterday I migrated my Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.

This migration could be done as an “Upgrade”, meaning that I did not need to reinstall all my software, With the “Upgrade Mode”  all my installed software remains functional under the new Windows 7 Home Premium.

Problems

Error message on startup:  “fppui3a.dll not found”   ===>  uninstall “pdfFactory”

I got Win7 with a standard image and did install the following additional software:
