Mein Windows Home Server 2011

Unboxing & Installation

  • Today my HP Proliant Micro Server N40L arrived.
  • This N40L has preinstalled 4GB of RAM and a DVD drive.
  • Microsift Windows Home Server 2011 was bundled but not preinstalled.
  • So the only thing I had to do for starting is to install at least one Fixed Drive.
  • Connecting the power cord, a USB keyboard and a VGA display, then inserting the Home Server DVD and the installation starts.
  • At the end of the installation I am warned, not to use the server as a normal workstation, but through a so called “Dashboard”.
  • I should now connect all my client computers with the new server by typing “http://proliant/connect”
  • When I do this, I am asked to download a “ComputerConnector” for my client….

Differences WHS 2011 zum Vorgänger

  • Dateisystem
  • Funktion “Ordner Duplizierung” ist weg, dafür gibt es jetzt “Shadow Copies” und eine Server-Sicherung mit der Möglichkeit eines Zeitplans)

Server Backup

  • Sicherungs-Job einrichten:
  • Server-Manager –> Speicher –> Windows Server Sicherung
  • Chose “Bare Metal Recovery”
  • Backup Format is called “VHD”. It’s used for Server backup and Client backup. Backup files are not in the original file format

Dashboard

Ist der Ersatz für die alte “Home Server Konsole”

Client Connection

  • Needs to be installed on each and every Client PC.
  • Is called “Launchpad” (old name: “Connector”)

Remote Access

Auf dem HomeServer das “Dashboard” (früher: Konsole) aufrufen.

Dort “Remotewebzugriff einrichten” anklicken und nacheinander:

  1. Router Einrichten
  2. Domänenname. Einrichten
  3. Websiteeinstellungen. Anpassen.

Das automatische Einrichten des Routers setzt UPnP beim Router voraus. Wenn der Router das nicht kann (z.B. SpeedPort W921V) muss man dies manuell auf dem Router selbst vornehmen.

Als Domänenname wird https://xxxxx.homeserver.com/ eingestellt. unter diesem Namen ist dann der HomeServer aus dem Internet erreichbar…. Wenn alles richtig eingestellt wurde….

Einrichtung des Routers ohne UPnP

Port-Weiterleitungen vom Router auf den HomeServer: 80, 443, 4125

Folgende Port-Weiterleitungen habe ich nun manuell auf dem SpeedPort W921V eingerichtet:

  • Router 8080 –> HomeServer 80
  • Router 443 –> HomeServer 443
  • Router 4125 –> HomeServer 4125

Und nun funktioniert der Zugriff auf den HomeServer (und auch das dort installierte ownCloud) von außerhalb.

Mit einer “Port-Weiterleitung” schaltet der SpeedPort auch automatisch die angegebenen Router-Ports geöffnet.

Einrichten Medien-Streaming auf WHS

Der Windows-Home-Server enthält einen DLNA-Server.

Shared Folders: Music, Pictures, Videos

WHS-Dashboard  –> Read-Zugriff für alle auf diese Folder

Inhalte in diese Ordner kopieren (z.B. MP3-Songs, Videos etc.)

Activate the “Media Server”

Enable “Media Library Sharing” on the folders

WHS-Dashboard –> Server Settings –> Media Tabs

VPN mit Hamachi (LogMeIn)

Status 2014

Hamachi is no longer free of costs.
I have changed my ADSL router to a FritzBox 7390, which natively supports a VPN.

VPN = Virtual Private Network

Ein VPN bedeutet, dass ich über das “offene” Internet eine verschlüselten Tunnel aufbauen kann und so z.B. von unterwegs mein heimisches lokales Netzwerk (LAN) über TCP/IP erreichen kann.

Dazu ist erforderlich. dass mein heimischer Internet-Router so ein VPN durchlässt bzw. eventuelle sogar unterstützt.

Ich kann dann von unterwegs alle meine Computer im LAN über TCP/IP erreichen und dann solche Applikationen untzen, die lediglich TCP/IP benötigen…..

Why Hamachi?

I am using a Speedport V921W  ADSL Router. This router is not capable of port forwarding, because for security reasons this is blocked (believe by deleting the RIP tables).

For this reason my interest was pointed at Hamachi.

Experience with Hamachi

Hamachi is a “hosted VPN” tool

Hamachi works “peer to peer” meaning we have only have to setup  VPN Clients and no VPN Server. The VPN Server is hosted by the nice people of LogMeIn.

Hamachi Setup

  • Get a LogMeIn account, or use an existing one
  • Login with your LogMeIn account at http://www.logmein.com
  • Download the software from the Menu “Products -> Hamachi”
  • Install Hamachi
  • Start Hamachi
  • On first use a pop-up window occurrs: Join an existing Network or Create a new Network
  • Join the existing Network that you have

 

 

 

Computer: Migrating from Windows Vista to Windows 7

Migration from Windows Vista to Windows 7

Yesterday I migrated my Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.

This migration could be done as an “Upgrade”, meaning that I did not need to reinstall all my software, With the “Upgrade Mode”  all my installed software remains functional under the new Windows 7 Home Premium.

Problems

Error message on startup:  “fppui3a.dll not found”   ===>  uninstall “pdfFactory”

Bluetooh Mouse: Control Panel ==> Hardware and Sound ==> View Devices and Printers  ==> Add Device

Last week I migrated my T400 from Windows XP to Windows 7.

I got Win7 with a standard image and did install the following additional software:

  1. Bluetooth Mouse

  6. Adobe Flash

Computer: CrashPlan Backup of my Computers

Datensicherung mit CrashPlan

CrashPlan wurde mir von einem Kollegen empfohlen. Man könne damit elegant und einfach seine Daten sichern.

Bottom Line

Ich gehe immer mehr dazu über, statt der lokalen Laufwerke mein NAS zu benutzen.

Damit kann ich CrashPlan (so wie es jetzt 2012 ist) vergessen.

Update: Wenn CrashPlan direkt auf dem NAS Server laufen würde, ginge es dann doch. Das mache ich seit Ende November mit Windows Home Server 2011 (WHS)

Meine Erfahrungen im Einzelnen:

1. Download

I could easily download CrashPlan from the website: http://www.crashplan.com/consumer/download.html

2. Installation und Konfiguration

Die eigentliche Installation ist einfach und schnell.

Für die Konfiguration wird das Programm “CrashPlanDesktop” benutzt.

Nach der Installatiuon muss man mit CrashPlan einem Account beitreten.

Ich installiere CrashPlan auf drei verschiedenen Computern in meinem Netz.

Alle Computer, auf denen CrashPlan mit dem gleichen CrashPlan-Accout installiert ist, bilden dann die Gruppe “Meine Computer”

 

3. Was kann ich mit CrashPlan sichern?

Den einen Computer, auf dem ich CrashPlan installiert habe……

Im Konfigurations-Programm “CrashPlanDesktop” kann man im unteren Bereich unter “Dateien” anhaken, welche Laufwerke und Ordner des Computers man sichern möchte. Dabei sind nur die lokalen Laufwerke, nicht Shares möglich

4. Wohin kann ich mit CrashPlan sichern?

4.1) Die erste Möglichkeit ist “auf einen meiner Computer” d.h. einen Computer, der mit meinem CrashPlan-Account registriert ist.

Allerdings kann nur auf die “echten”, sprich lokalen Laufwerke eines meiner Computer gesichert werden, nicht auf “gemappte” Laufwerke, die z.B. im LAN auf einem NAS sind.

4.2) Ordner auf einem lokalen Laufwerk des Computers, den ich sichern will

Also z.B. eine externe USB-Platte.

Das ist extra Verwaltungsaufwand und eigentlich nicht der Sinn einer “bequemen, automatischen” Sicherung.

4.3) in der CrashPlan-Cloud

Das ist sehr bequem, kostet aber Geld – und es sichert nur die lokalen Laufwerke

4.4) Auf einem Computer eines Freundes

Ist funktional idenisch mit “auf eigenem Computer” d.h. geht nicht auf Shares, ist ansonsten natürlcih aus Sicherheitsaspekten ganz sinnvoll.

4.5) Auf ein NAS?

Das wäre absolut Klasse.

Allerdings müsste man CrashPlan ersteinmal auf so einem kleinen Linux-Computer ohne grafische Oberfläche installieren können.

Angeblich soll das gehen, ich habe es aber im ersten Anlauf nicht hinbekommen.

5. Was kostet CrashPlan?

1 Computer (lokale Laufwerke) 3 USD per Monat

2-10 Computer (lokale Laufwerke) 6 USD pro Monat

6. Performance

Auf dem Computer, auf dem ich meine normalen Arbeiten machen will läut nun ständig ein CrashPlan-Service im Hintergrund – die sog. “Backup Engine”.

Beispielsweise habe ich heute um 12 Uhr eine Sicherung von 60 GB von meinem lokalen Coputer auf die Cloud (CrashPlan Central) gestartet).. Wie wird das meinen Computer belasten und wielange wird es dauern?

Backup 1: 148 GB ==> 6,4 Tage geschätzt

Backup 2: 297 GB ==> 10,4 Tage geschätzt

7. iPhone App / Android App

Das ist eine schicke Sache. da kann ich mir auf meinem iPhone anschauen, was ich schon alles in der Cloud gesichert habe.

Auf meinem Android Tablet funktioniert es genauso.

Wohnen: Projekt Wintergarten

Wir wollen einen Wintergarten auf unserer Terrasse errichten

Wir möchten auf unserer grossen Terrasse einen kleinen Wintergarten errichten. So 3×4 Meter könnte das Ding groß werden.

Dies ist das Tagebuch der Schritte, die wir dafür unternommen haben.

Juli 2012: Wir holen Angebote von zwei Firmen ein.

24.9.2012 Besuch beim Bauamt in der sog. “Bauberatung”, die für 15 Minuten kostenlos ist und danach was kostet.

Ergebnisse der Bauberatung:

1) Das Grundstück darf laut X-Plan zu 5/10 bebaut werden. Das bestehende Gebäude überschreitet diese 5/10 Bestimmung bereits etwas, das ist aber als “Bestandsschutz” erlaubt (wir müssen kein Stück von dem Gebäude abreissen). Das errichten eines Wintergartens würde aber 3×4=12 Quadratmeter zusätzliche “bebaute Fläche” ausmachen und dafür müssen wir einen “Befreiungsantrag” stellen, über den die Baukommission entscheidet.

2) Denkmalschutz. Das Haus steht unter Denkmalschutz. Wir sollten deshalb als erstes mit der dafür zuständigen Kulturbehöre abklären, was die zu unserem Projekt Wintergarten sagen. Im gesamten Innenhof gibt es bisher noch keinen Wintergarten. Wir wären die ersten. Das Denkmalamt der Kulturbehörede könnte einigen Auflagen erteilen.

3) Brandschutz. Wir planen zwar keine Bebauung an der Grundstücksgrenze (wo ka 2,50m pro Geschoss Abstand einzuhalten wären), aber durch die Nähe des geplanten Wintergartens zum Treppenhaus mit seiner Tür in den Innenhof wird es Brandschutzauflagen geben im Rahmen des Bauantrags. Generell darf die Fläche von der Tür im Winkel von 120 Grad nicht bebaut werden. Die Dame von der Bauberatung will mir dazu noch einen Text mit einer Zeichnung per E-Mail schicken.

As recording of videos via (digital) HDMI is very much restricted by copy protection mechanisms like HCP, there is the analog back door

  • Component Video if of high quality and reaches nearly digital quality with HDTV

Durch das konsequente Abschotten gegen Industriestandards, die das Nutzen von vorhandenen Lösungen per Standard-Architekturen (z.B. Web-Browser mit Adobe Flash, externe USB-Geräte,…) ermöglichen, ist Apple gezwungen für jedes und alles eine individuelle propieträre Sonderlocke als “App” anzubieten. Womit die Chance besteht, eine eigenlich über Standards mögliche Funktionalität in propietärem Gewand “schicker” darzubieten.

I already have converted all my od Vinyl LP records to MP3 – his has been done by a service from the German AWO.

Problems with these MP3 audio files:

  • They are properly named, but they do not have MP3 tags
  • The quality is sometimes not that good

The idea is to put them into my iTunes Library and go through the process of iTunes Match in order to replace most of them without costs by high quality AAC audio files from the iTunes Store.

In order to do this and gain all the advantages from iTunes Match two things are necessary:

  • Put these old MP3 files in exactly the folder structure that I use for my iTunes, as the eventually replaced and better AAC files will be downloaded from the cloud into that folder structure i.e. Folder “Artist” –> Folder “Album” –> Audio file (with filename = song title)
  • Create ID3 tags with “Artist”, “Album” and “Title”, as iTunes Match will use these when downloading from the cloud and iTunes Match will not use the tags contained in their AAC audio files (take special care if “Album Artist” ist used)

Creating ID3 Tags with MP3Tag

After I have put my MP3 audio files into folders by Arstist and sub-folders by Album, it’s easy to create the ID3 tags with the excellent software tool MP3Tag:

  • Navigate to a album folder
  • select all files in that folder
  • enter artist name and album name once for all the songs and save.
  • Click “Convert” in the menu bar and choose “Filename – Tag” with a “Format String” of “%skip% %title%”

Copy the MP3 files to my local iTunes Library

For working with my tablet computers I need more storage space than the built-in storage of 32 GB or 64 GB. So I decided to use a mobile hard disk of 500 GB or 750 GB or 1 TB. Now I am looking for a suitable external enclose and the disk itself.
