Android App EagleEye shows photos from local SD card and Metadata

EagleEye is the photo App I have looked for!

With EagleEye I can view my photos that are stored on the local SD card by folder (e.g.  folder name = Year & Month or folder name = date & event name).

This works even with Android 4.4 and an external SD card (!).   ( QuickPic with Android 4.4: “Keine Bilder auf der SD-Karte gefunden!”)

All my photos have IPTC metadata (e.g. caption text) and EagleEye is able to show the IPTC caption automatically together with the photos (if selected to do so).

EagleEye is great for showing photos to a small audience….!

I have both, an

  • iPad 2 ( Display 2048×1536)
  • Android 4.0 Tablet: Acer Iconia Tab A500. (Display WXGA 1280×800)
  • Android 4.0 Tablet: Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 (Display 1920×1080 “Full HD”)

Durch das konsequente Abschotten gegen Industriestandards, die das Nutzen von vorhandenen Lösungen per Standard-Architekturen (z.B. Web-Browser mit Adobe Flash, externe USB-Geräte,…) ermöglichen, ist Apple gezwungen für jedes und alles eine individuelle propieträre Sonderlocke als “App” anzubieten. Womit die Chance besteht, eine eigenlich über Standards mögliche Funktionalität in propietärem Gewand “schicker” darzubieten.

Added value for rooting my Acer Iconia A500 Tablet

The rooted Acer Iconia A500 works great. Advantages are:

  • Titanium Backup
  • Time Syncronization with free App “ClockSync”
  • Samba File Server with free App “Samba Filesharing”
  • Linux Superuser command line support (App: Terminal Emulation) e.g. for “mount”

Included in the flashed ROM image from Thor (v164) was also:

  • Ethernet by wire with USB-Ethernet adapter
  • WiFi tethering
  • 3G meodem support: Huawei xyz

USB devices sucessfully tested:

  • USB Stick (flash drine) CnMemory mistral 32 GB formatted FAT32
  • Fixed disk Samsung HM320IJ (320 GB) formatted FAT32 – mounted in an Raidsonic Icy Box IB-266 StUSD-B
  • Ethernet by USB: davicom DM9601 usb ethernet adapter native support
  • USB Card Reader: Digitus USB 2.0 Multi Card Reader DA-70310-2

Scenario 1: A500 Samba Filesharing for iPad

  • Configure as WIFi Access Point: Settings -> More -> “Portable WiFi Hotspot”
  • Plug in external hard disk: 320 GB with 200 MP4 videos
  • Start Samba Filesharing

Scenario 2: A500 TwonkyServer Mobile for iPad

  • Configure as WIFi Access Point: Settings -> More -> “Portable WiFi Hotspot”
  • Plug in external hard disk (Samsung 320 GB disk with 200 MP4 videos)
  • Mount external hard disk in a folder on the sdcard (this lets Twonky include the media from the hard disk)
    • Open Terminal
    • cd /mnt/sdcard (only once: mkdir usbvideos)
    • su
    • mount -o bind /mnt/usb_storage/videos ./usbvideos
    • exit
  • Start TwonkyServer Mobile (how?)
    • try “Rescan” in Twony if hard disk was mounted after Twonky start
  • On the iPad
    • Establish WiFi connection to the portable WiFi hotspot
    • Start App “AcePlayer” -> Medien Explorer ->Media Servers -> TwonkyServer Mobile
  • Streaming with TwonkyServer Mobile sucessfully tested with:
    • MP4 container with AVC (H.264) video and ACC audo
    • AVI container with .DivX video and MP3 audio

How I Rooted my Acer Iconia A500

My Dedication to the Android Tablet “Acer Iconia Tab A500”

Last year I bought the tablet Acer Iconia Tab A500 with Android 3.0 (“Honeycomb”) preinstalled.

When I started up the A500, it immediately updated to Android 3.2.1.

I was quite staisfied with this 10″ tablet, I loved especially:

  • the fast processor
  • the nice display which reacts very fast and precisly to the finger guestures
  • the fully-blown USB host

The major weak point in my judgement is:

  • Can not be recharged via USB (but I found a car charger finally, that is kind of half of the solution)

Decision to flash the A500 ROM

My decision now not to treat my Acer A500 tablet as a professional working platform, but only as a kind of “toy” was influenced by:

  • Acer did announce to deliver upgrades to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwch = ICS) for April 27, 2012 but nothing happeded util now (26. May 2012)
  • Relevant Apps on the A500 requrie the device to be “rooted” (Titanium Backup, ClockSync, Cisco Any Connect)
  • My colleagues more and more are using iPads

So i now give to the A500 the status of beeing a “toy” while planning to move to the iPad some time during the year.

How I flashed the A500

The steps:

  • Honeycomb 3.2.1 (jargon: “HC3.2.1”) is not rootable
  • So we have to go back to an older Android version: 3.0.1
  • We have to download a appropiate ROM image, ……
  • Then install that older Android version (jargon: “flash the ROM” ) using the normal (jargon: “stock”) ROM update procedure (Recovery Mode) ……
  • Root that Android 3.0.1 with a tool named Iconiaroot-1.3.apk
  • Install CWM (= ClockworkMod Manager) which replaces the “normal” (jargon: “stock”) recovery procedures with more options. This requires a “rooted” Android version….
  • Decide which alternative Android ROM image you want to installl (jargon: “flash”)
  • Download that ROM image of choice
  • Install that ROM image (jargon: flash) by using CWM

Downgrade your Android to version 3.0.1

  • Download file “downgrade_not_stable.zip” from http://netload.in/dateiExhRzE8Tbs.htm
  • Unzip and put file “update.zip” on the external micro SD-card of the Acer Iconia Tab A500
  • Power down the Acer A500
  • Power up the Acer A500 into it’s normal Upgrade Mode (Recovery Mode) i.e. you must hold the “Volume Down” key while pressing the power button. This will “Upgrade” (jargon: “flash”) the system ROM with the file “update.zip” on the external Micro SD.card

Root your Android 3.0.1

Install CWM

  • CWM stands for “ClockworkMod Manager”
  • CWM extends the actions you can perform in Recovery Mode
  • Download file ww-9.2.1.11-CWM-full-rooted.zip from: http://tegraowners.com/?cat=7
  • Install
  • use….

Chose a ROM, that you want to install (jargon: Flash that ROM) on the Acer A500

  • Thor A500 ROM V14.2
  • Download the ROM from http://tegraowners.com/?p=1272
  • Put the ROM on the external Micro SD Card of the A500
  • Reboot the A500 into Recovery mode (CWM)
  • in CWM:
    • Wipe data / factory reset
    • Wipe cache partition
    • Advanced –> Wipe Dalvik cache (Java Virtual Machine)
    • Intsall ZIP from SD Card
    • Select the ZIP file for flashing
    • …..

Jargon

  • ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0)
  • HC = Honeycomb  (Android 3.2.6)
  • CWM = ClockworkMod
  • Stock = the “normal” things delivered with a device by the manufacturer / vendor

Observations with this ROM:

  • Mount point for the removable Micro SD card is not /mnt/external_sd but /Removable/MicroSD
  • Mount point for the USB-drive is not /mnt/usbdrive but /Removable/USBdisk1

After that successful experience with flashing my A500 with the image “Thor A500 ROM v14”, I tried the next step….

Steps to flash the A500 ROM with is image: Same procedure as described above

Results:

  • My A500 now runns with a rooted Android 4.0.4 (ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich) very smoothly.
  • Since I wipped as recommended, I had to re-install all my apps.
  • To start that install thing I hab first to install the “Google Market Place”, how called “Google Play”. I found that in the download: …..

Applications

  • Titanium Backup now runs perfectly (required root access)
  • ClockSync now works perfectly (required root access)
  • Google Chrome Browser (required Android 4 – ICS)

Next thing to try:: HUAWEI 3G USB WebStick……

Von meinem wunderbaren Android-Tablet Acer Iconia A500 (neu: Samsung Tab Active) möchte ich ab und zu auch mal etwas drucken (z.B. meine Bordkarte nach dem Einchecken).

ePrinting von HP

Das setzt voraus, dass man sich einen neuen Drucker von HP kauft, der dieses ePrint unterstützt.

Google Cloud Printing

Alternativ funktioniert das auch mit “normalen” Druckern – dazu muss aber Google Chrome benutzt werden

Server für Google Cloud Printing

Zu nächst  muss ein PC quasi als “Server” eingerichtet werden. Dazu benutze ich meinen Windows-PC, der einen alter Drucker ( HP Photosmart C7280 ) über mein LAN anspricht.

Auf diesem PC habe ich Google Chrome installiert.

In Chrome dann Cloud Print aktivieren: Einstellungen -> Details -> Google Cloud Print

Damit mein Cloud Print funktioniert, muss der PC angeschaltet sein und Chrome aufgerufen sein…

Online-Fotoalben mit Flickr

Ich hatte mich probeweise für Flickr zum Hosten meiner Fotos entschieden.

Update 2023: Ich ziehe jetzt von Flickr auf Google Drive um

Flickr wurde von SmugMug aufgekauft und hat prompt seinen kostenlosen Plan “Flickr basic” extrem verschlechtet: Ab dem 8. Januar 2019 dürfen nur noch maximal 1000 Fotos und Videos kostenlos gespeichert werden während es vorher 1 Terabyte waren.  Ich migriere deshalb meine Fotos auf Google Fotos; dort habe ich 15 GB frei und auch eine Möglichkeit zur Einbindung in WordPress.

Funktionen von Flickr

Anmelden bei Flickr

Auf der Internet-Seite http://flickr.com kann man sich mit seinem Flickr-Konto anmelden.

Fotos vom lokalen Computer hochladen

  • Auf der Flickr Web-Seite kann ich dann Fotos in den Formaten JPG, PNG, GIF (nicht RAW) sowie Videos in diversen Formaten hochladen.
  • Das Ziel des Hochladens ist immer ein Album oder der mein sog. “Fotostream”
  • Es gibt auch einen sog. “Uploader” for Windows – aber nur für Flickr Pro Konten.
  • Automatisches Hochladen von Fotos: Von Smartphones oder Tablets können Fotos etc. auch automatisch in einen Online-Speicher hochgeladen werden.
    Das wird durch Einstellungen der betreffenden App (z.B. Dropbox, Flickr, Google,…) aktiviert werden.

A photo or video may not be uploading because it doesn’t meet our requirements:

  • Photos can’t exceed 200MB or Images can be no more than 31.25 times wider than they are tall.
  • Videos can’t exceed 1GB

Was passiert sonst noch beim Hochladen/Herunterladen mit Flickr:

  • Der Dateiname wird leider geändert (wenn ich wieder herunterlade)
  • Die Auflösung war vorher (Beispiel) 4044 x 2729 – nach dem downladen ist sie “full size” 2821 x 1898

Fotos beschriften: Flickr und IPTC

Hauptgrund für meine Entscheidung  war: Flickr ist der einzige Anbieter, der drei IPTC-Metadaten in der Fotodarstellung unterstützt:

  1. IPTC Title              (XnView: IPTC Object Name)
  2. IPTC Heading       (XnView: IPTC Überschrift)
  3. IPTC Description  (XnView: IPTC Objektbeschreibung)
  4. IPTC Keywords     (XnView: IPTC Stichwörter)

Vor dem Upload zu Flickr beschrifte ich meine JPG-Fotos bereits mit IPTC-Metadaten z.B. mit der Software XnView.
Durch den Upload auf Flickr gehen die IPTC-Metadaten Object Name und Object Description nicht verloren.
Die IPTC-Meta-Daten werden auf den Flickr-Web-Seiten mit angezeigt. Falles kein Object Name vorhanden war, wird stattdessen der Dateiname in Flickr angezeigt. Wenn man beim Flickr-Foto auf EXIF klickt werden noch mehr Metadaten angezeigt: Headline, Keywords, Caption (=Object Description), Subject
Die IPTC-Metadaten sind nach einem Download auf meinen lokalen Windows-Compter erhalten.

Fotoalben definieren

Mehrere Fotos können zu Fotoalben zusammengefasst werden. Die Reihenfolge der Fotos innerhalb eines Albums und das Deckblatt kann man sebst festlegen.

Fotos für andere freigeben

Manchmal möchte man seine Fotos auch für andere zum Betrachten freigeben z.B. Familienangehörige, Urlaubsbekanntschaften etc.

Fotos auf den lokalen Computer herunterladen

Man kann Fotos wieder herunterladen (download) ; dabei bleiben die Metadaten (IPTC) erhalten. Der Dateiname wird aber leider komplett verändert.

Fotos archivieren

Man kann Fotos in ein sog. Archiv verschieben, die verschwinden dann aus der Ansicht “Fotos”.

Fotos in WordPress einbinden

Einbinden über URL

Grundsätzlich kann ich Flickr-Fotos einfach in WordPress einbinden, wenn ich eine richtige URL dafür habe.

Bei Flickr ist der Aufbau der URL folgender: https://live.staticflickr.com/{server-id}/{id}_{secret}_{size-suffix}.jpg

Sei  65535 die Flickr-Servernummer
Sei  50981885987 die Flickr Id des Fotos
Sei 944460215a das Flickr-Secret, was gleich ist für alle Fotos bis zur Größe “Medium”
Sei b das Symbol für die Größe des Fotos

Dann hätten wir in diesem Beispiel also als URL für das Foto: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50981885987_944460215a_b.jpg

Wie bekommt man die URL eines BIldes?

  • Das Bild betrachten
  • Klicken auf Download
  • auswählen “View all Sizes”
  • auswählen “original”   (wenn ausgegraut, wird das Foto schon in Originalgröße angezeigt)
  • Recht Kicken auf das Bild
  • Auswählen “Grafikadresse kopieren” (copy image address)

Einbinden über WordPress-Plugin

Ich verwende das WordPress-Plugin “Flickr Embed Plus”. Da gibt es aber zur Zeit (Feb. 2021) ein Problem: AJAX error: error ()

Weitere Erfahrungen mit Flickr

Flickr auf Android

Ein Wermutstropfen: die offizielle Android-App von Yahoo läuft nicht auf meinem Acer Iconia A500 mit Android 3.0 (“Honeycomb”), sondern erst mit Adroid 4.0.

Andererseits: Für meine Fickr-Anforderungen auf dem Android-Tablet ist das überhaupt kein Problem, denn meine Anforderung auf dem Tablet ist, dass ich die Flickr-Fotos sehen und zeigen kann – sonst nix. Das kann z.B. die Android-App JustPictures wunderbar….

Mittlerweile (Sommer 2012) habe ich Android 4.0 auf dem “ge-root-eten” Acer Iconia.

Ist Flickr zur Datensicherung geeignet?

Frage 1:  Datenvolumen. Ich habe ca. 60 GB Fotos…..

Frage 2: Verlustloses Download. Bekommt man beim Download die Fotos genau so wieder zurück, wie man sie up-ge-loaded hat…? Antwort: NEIN

Flickr Änderungen in 2018

Flickr wurde von Smugmug aufgekauft. Postwendent wurden die Flick-Pläne wie folgt geändert:

  • Free Account: nur noch 1000 Dateien (Fotos etc.)
  • Pro Account: unlimited storage, EUR 53,88 per year

Übergang falls mehr als 1000 Dateien

Ab Januar 2019 werden Uploads gesperrt; danach werden die ältesten Datenen gelöscht
